~~Background~~
Background: Kuja is an unique Genome-- or artificial life form-- created by Garland to be more than just a mindless, soulless body. Kuja was given the ability to think and feel, and also made to be the strongest for the purpose of destroying the souls of other worlds, so that Terra, his home planet, could assimilate them and prolong it's life-cycle.
However unfortunately for Garland, when he made Kuja, he forgot one important thing; the power of one's individuality. Kuja quickly grew to see himself as far more superior than a Genome, which resulted in the rejection of his destiny as a Genome. He hid his tail and plotted behind Garland's back. In the end he proved to be too much an individual that Garland couldn't control him. It was then that Garland began work on another Genome to replace Kuja; one he named Zidane. When Kuja learned of this treachery, he abducted the infant Zidane and deposited him on the planet of Gaia. With the thought of his place forever sealed, Kuja continued on his path.
Years later, Garland finally sent Kuja out to fulfill his destiny; to be the Dark Messanger, the Angel of Death. Kuja was sent to Gaia to distrupt the planet's life-cycle and send the souls of Gaians to Terra. On Gaia he masquraded as a noble and an arms-dealer, using the greed of the distraught Queen Brahne, ruler of Alexandria, to his advantage. He supplied her with an army of black mage dolls so that she may lay seige to the other great nations of Gaia, Lindblum, Cleyra, and Burmecia. With the power of the Alexandrian army, his black mage dolls, and the powers of the Eidolons extracted from Brahne's daughter-- great avatar-like beings of emmense power-- they ravaged the world. He was shocked to find out that Brahne's daughter was an associate of Zidane's. Moreso shocked that Zidane was still alive, but he didn't worry. He was still the most powerful Genome. There was no reason for him to worry.
Brahne, driven by greed and lust for power, turned on Kuja. Summoning the Eidolon Bahamut, the King of Dragons, she sought to do away with him. Bahamut attack Kuja at the Iifa Tree and he while he escaped the blast, he was surprised to have found he'd been injured, even if it were only a mild would. The power Bahamut displayed pleased Kuja so, he took it for himself; with the power of the Invincible, the airship Garland had given him so that he may cross between worlds, he enslaved Bahamut and turned him against Brahne.
He then set his sights on Alexandria, where an even more powerful Eidolon was said to slumber. Bahamut attacked the great city, destroying thousands. Only with the combined powers of Garnet and Eiko-- the last of the summoner tribe-- did the Eidolon awake. There stood Alexander, the Holy Guard. Kuja sent Bahamut against Alexander, but Bahamut proved to be no match. He attempted to use Invincible to capture Alexander, however onboard was Garland, who'd grown tired of Kuja's insubordination. In a single attack, the Invincible wiped out Alexander, Alexandria, and nearly Kuja himself.
Kuja managed to survive the attack and escaped back to his Desert Palace, badly injured. He refused to believe that he'd almost died. He was Kuja, he would never die.
They'd past the point of no return; the final act was about to begin.
Kuja waited for Zidane and his friends to come after him, as he knew they would. Kuja was the foremost reason they had to fight for. He'd transgressed on each of them in some way, so it was only natural that they come and seek revenge. And when they did, he was waiting. He captured them all and coerced Zidane into retrieving something of value from an Olivert, a place where magic could not be used. He'd promised to let Zidane's friends go after the object was within his posession, but as soon as Zidane had left, he revoked his word and left the remaining prisoners to die. However he hadn't accounted for Regeant Cid-- the leader of Lindblum and currently transfixed into the body of a frog-- resetting the puzzle and freeing the prisoners.
This wasn't expected, but he used it to his advantage. He kidnapped Eiko and planned to extract her Eidolons as well. He'd lost Bahamut, but perhaps she would yield a powerful Eidolon to match the fallen king. He cared little that the extraction process was meant for summoners who'd come of age, and Eiko was only a child. All he cared for was power. Then he witnessed something extraordinary; Mog, the runtish moogle that went everywhere with Eiko, had Tranced and became the Eidolon Madeen. It was then he realized something; if a small, insignificant creature like a moogle to Trance, then he could as well, and become the most powerful being in the world.
With that in mind, Kuja left for the Shimmering Islands, where he could return to the planet of Terra. On Terra, he planned to defeat Garland and retake the Invincible, but to his surprise Garland had been taken down by Zidane. How utterly ironic it was, the one he'd created to replace Kuja was the one to put an end to Garland's plans. As a final goodbye, Kuja engaged Zidane, saying he'd deal with this traitor. Unfortunately for him, Zidane was no push over. Being the weaker model of Genome, Kuja was defeated, but he would no go quietly.
It was then that Kuja went into Trance. Suddenly rejuvenated and with more power than before, he repaid the party in full. Then he turned to Garland, wondering if he should slay him quickly or kill him slowly, only to learn that it wouldn't matter, for Kuja would die soon enough. Garland revealed that now that Zidane was of age, Kuja's lifespan was cut drastically short. At first he refused to believe it. It wasn't possible, it couldn't be true. But he knew it was, and it was unfair. All he'd worked for and it was finally in his hands! Yet he wouldn't have the time to savor it. Impossible. The Dark Messanger would end up like those black mages he created who ceased to function after their alotted time.
Well, if he was to die.. He wouldn't die alone. If he could not live then why should anyone else?! In a fit of insane rage, Kuja's powers went out of control. Terra was utterly destroyed by it's own creation.
Luckily for him he managed to escape the dying planet before it fell and Kuja returned to Gaia. He stood at the Iifa Tree, where his plans had first taken root. The Iifa Tree that which had linked Terra and Gaia, that harnessed the souls of those slain. There Kuja created a dimension known as Memoria. He was dying, was going to die, but he would take Zidane and the others with him. In the depths of Memoria he waited for them to come to him. The curtains rose on the final act, and this antagonist would meet the heroes head on with dignity. However, before that was to pass.. |
